Yes it is gambling. While there is considerable skill exhibited by strong players, you can play a perfect game with perfect reads and still lose. Look at Daniel Negraneau in '05. He played an excellent game, made great decisions, and was bounced in the first day of the WSOP. The Christian thing is their own hang-up. Random chance happens, there are showdowns, and people have to make decisions on incomplete information. There is no guarantee anyone will make money and every single professional has, at some time in their poker career, been flat broke.

There is a site called Pogo.com where you can play all kinds of games, even poker without paying. You can win the Jackpot and the daily drawing and don't have to spend a cent to do so. You can also build up points to enter into drawings for cash. Hope this helps :-)
