I took my 16 wk old puppy to the vet for vaccinations and mentioned that she was sneezing a bit. The vet then told me she probably needed clavamox but he had to run blood tests and the whole thing would be $200! I asked if I could just have the clavamox and he said not unless I paid for all the tests. Otherwise the dog is healthy, no fever, lungs are clear and she is active and has a huge appeite. Am I a horrible dog mom for not paying the money and is it possible if she has aa cold it will just clear up on its own?

Absolutely not. Dogs and cats contract colds just like us, although it doesn't seem nearly as often and they don't need antibiotics unless it turns into something worse. Don't pay for something that is unnecessary. If it does turn out that he gets an infection from it, which is unlikely, you can always go back. What if it's not even a cold? It could be allergies too. In fact, allergies are almost more likely. Veternarians and doctors, especially doctors like to prescribe things you don't even need sometimes . . . why is that? Oh, and antibiotics can't be used on viruses. It would be useless.

I never heard of Clavamox used for viruses. I only ever used it for skin infections and wound care. Are you sure the vet said Clavamox. I have some right in my medicine cabinet . I guess it is an Amoxicillian derivative so I guess it could help. Does your vet suspect something else?

Okay, I just went on line and as a former nurse I wanted to see what the primary use of Clavamox is for dogs. I was right it is used for gram positive and gram negative bacteria. That is not a viral med. It is used for skin, wounds, cellulitous even ear infections but not as a respiratory med. Look it up yourself.

Don't pay for something that won't do any good. Viruses can't be cured by antibiotics. Absolutely cannot. You just have to let them run their course. It could also be an allergy. Or just some dust in the air.

Yes, the other alternative is a good warm meal. but you can go to a cheaper vet. I just gave mine antibiotics this morning esp if they don't eat much the night before. They get sick easily. Its important to give lots of chicken meat etc cos if they eat well, they get stronger and don't fall sick so easily just like humans.also give peas and beans, mixed veg in form of a packet you can get at mkt or supermkt. If he eats well, he falls sick less often. but also don't overfeed him. If he just got a cold just give him something soothing for his stomach like a good meal and let him recover. I also got a good tip. That is a slice of cheese is a very good perk as an energy food.but you can check if dogs eat cheese.Holy water's good too.Basically, they just need to eat a lot of good food that you can find out.

DOGS DO NOT GET COLDS........ as with humans anitbiotics do nothing for colds anyway.. dog could have kennel cough which is very contagious,,, what was the vet going to test for???? that you should find out. ( he certainly wasn't testing for colds) could be your dog is allergic to something
