Turn it off for towing, or hauling A LOT of stuff in mountainous areas. Otherwise, just keep it on for better highway mileage and less wear/tear on the engine at higher speeds.

Overdrive is another gear that makes your drive shaft go faster than your engine. The button makes it possible for the car to shift into this gear when you are up to speed. Normally, the highest gear is "direct drive", where the drive shaft RPM and the engine rpm are equal.
Best bet is leave it off unless you're driving on highway over 55mph. I know a lot of transmissions break down when that button is set for O/D and they are just idling in city. That's why it's best to leave it off when puttering around at city speeds.
Try driving with it off on the highway going 65 or so. Then turn it on. If you didn't hear it shift, it may not be working anyway.

No, Overdrive is inherently DESIGNED to save gas above the threshold of 35-40mph. All modern cars have a higher gear ratio called overdrive, as long as the drive ratio is higher than 1:1. Many cars before the early 90's do not have this. Nearly every car since then has it. You ONLY want to turn OVERDRIVE OFF when you are ascending or descending a long incline (such as a mountain), or towing a heavy load. When going uphill, some cars tend to "hunt" between gears, placing more strain on the transmission, and ultimately slowing your ascent (turning OFF overdrive will prevent this). When going downhill with overdrive OFF, your engine does some of the braking for you, helping take the strain off your brakes as you descend, extending the life of your brakes by helping prevent brake burnout.

The above observations are correct plus:
Typically in OD there is no engine braking while turning OD to OFF provides engine braking if you want/need it.
If you have a tacometer you can verify the OD operation by watching the TAC while turning OD OFF and ON

i own a repair shop, and you would see a difference in driving it on the open road it would help you get a lot better gas mileage on the car,but around town you wont see any difference in it at all ,it was mainly meant to be used on long stretches of highways and free ways, but not recommended in town ,and real heavy stop and go driving, good luck i hope this help,s.

OD off will shut down ur last gear. keep it on. usually for when ur car is switching back and forth between 3rd adn 4th gear and it gets annoying to the driver.
