To make the band sound better. Honestly! They make every member accountable so that one does not over play the other in volume... Level equalization..

next time you go to a concert look right in the center of the crowd you will see a bunch of blinking lights on boards covered in switches slides and knobs. that is the sound mixing board and the guy sitting there is the sound engineer. the band brings their on sound engineer along because he is familiar with the bands sound and we the fans are used to the band sounding in a certain way and the engineer producer is responsible for making that happen in the studio so he is brought along to insure that is reproduced as closely as possible live.

Each different venue has different sound characteristics, and the recording engineer is there to make sure they are being used effectively. A good set up for one location could be lousy in another for he audience.
