Chronologically about 1 year. Realistically who knows; my Stimpy is 13 1/2 and STILL act like she was a kitten. Just this morning she gave me a whack to get me up; it was 0600. Need I say more. LUCK....

Kittens are Kittens until they are 1 years old. It says this on most the kitten food packages and should tell you when to move on to a different food.

At 8 years old the cat becomes a senior cat.

It depends on how you treat your kitten. Psychologically, an adult cat can remain in kittenhood and you being the mother forever. A kitten becomes an adult as it learns adult skills/behaviors. I brought home a 6 week old stray and babied him for years. He clung to me constantly...something I enjoyed until the day he died (at 14). The vet told me he would never mature and it was my fault. He was a total "innie", slept with me, stayed near me always, and we had a wonderful bond. This is not for everyone. But I learned about the psychological maturing of a cat through my Baby L.
In saying all this, a cat can be mature physically at 1-2 years of age (dependent upon the breed) - but psychological/emotional maturity into cathood can be an entirely different matter.

A kitten is a cat at about 9 months+, but a cat is always a kitten. Just try rolling a ping pong ball in their direction.
