Do you think hearing mothers should teach their child sign language at at early age? why?

OMGoodness yes I think this is an awesome idea it is something the child can use for the rest of their lives. It helps when the child is young and can't tell you what they want and also when they get older and in school if they are speaking with a hearing impaired person they can have a conversation with them. A friend of mine is hearing impaired and he is one of the reason's why I decided to teach my son sign language because when I first met him I couldn't speak with him it was so hard to understand him. I like that while I am teaching myself sign language my son is also learning as well

Should they? Not necessarily, can they...of course. I taught my daughter sign language starting at 6 months old and she was the baby i knew at that time that would not cry when she was hungry, simply signed eat to me or whoever else was with her. She knew more, apple, cracker...alot of signs. At nine months she crawled to the front door and signed walk please. I think that teaching a child sign language is a great way to start them off with communication. Shes 3 1/2 and she does not use it anymore however.

As for sign language delaying speech, that has been proven to be untrue. My daughter has been talking along with her signs since she was a year old, and has always been ahead of others in her age group in relation to verbal communication.

I think its a great Idea! I wish I had learned it when I was a kid. Its just something you should learn like Spanish. I have a customer at my job that comes in every month and he is def. I have to wait for him to look at me so he can read my lips. It would be nice if we could communicate through sign language.
They say kids learn faster that way. If your baby cant talk yet teach it sign language. It will help you communicate with your child so instead of them screaming and crying for some milk or a toy or whatever they can can say it with thier hands. :)

I think it's great to teach basic signs such as more, eat, please and all done. I taught these signs to my daughter at 10 months and it gave her a way to communicate early on. She is now 19 months and is 3 months ahead on her language and although still uses signs she says the word when she signs. I recommend to all my parents that I work with to teach simple signs early on. Research has shown that it actually speeds up their speech development.

It helps the frustration with communication when a child can't convey with words (due to lack of articulation of the mouth) what he needs or wants or has done.

Also, ASL is the most widely used thus making is nearly a universal language. It's on my list of languages I still would like to become fluent in.

I think they should. I have taught my son the alphabet and he does better on his school spelling tests because he can see the letters when he's signing them before he writes them down. Also you never know when an accident can occur and your child would need to know signing. Another thing is deaf interpretures get paid alot of money here where I'm from. My mom is one.

Yes. Communication is the keystone of human activity. Children need to learn to be able to make friends and interact, even if they can't hear.

Yes I think they should. It helps a child to communicate before they can talk. This reduces some of the frustration during the terrable two's.

i guess it depends on the family, i dont know how to do sign language so how could i teach it to my child?
