My friend is a 6th grade girl. She hasn't had a eye checkup since she was 4, and lately she is having to squint all the time (esp. when she is reading, watching TV, or on the computer). Those things also give her a headache. If she doesn't squint, she gets a dull ache in her eyes and she says it feels like cool air is blowing across them. When she was 4 the eye doctor said reading lasses were optional (she could read at 4!) but her parents never bought them. She has been having these eye problems since mid-November. She is on a swim team but she has Jr. Hydrospex which are very good goggles, so we think that's not it. She can still see things but she told me it's blurrier than it used to be. She does think glasses are col, but she is extremely honest and she would never lie about something like that (or anything really). Also, she would never want to make her parents buy something that expensive for her if it wasn't really needed. So please help her out. :)
Thanks!!!!

Her parents know, and they are going to take her to an eye doctor but they are so busy because her mom has medical problems. She is homeschooled and told me she has never gotten a sports physical. :)

Your friend needs to have her eyes checked-she has to have a physical every year for sport but this wouldnt have come up if she didnt mention it. Ideally its good to have your eyes checked every yearbut most insurance companies will only pay for eye exams every other year.

If her mom has a membership at a warehouse store like Sams or Costco maybe she can mention it while she is there as they offer eye exams and there doctors are usually in on the weekends and have one late night. The same is true for Walmart and JCPenney. If she needs to buy something for school maybe she can call JCPenney ahead and schedule and appointment

Some schools offer eye glasses-maybe hers does too?

More importantly she needs to let her parents know ASAP-the symptoms she are experiencing were the same as what I did before i started wearing glasses. I started wearing glasses in the summer so i had a great pair of RX sunglasses that i wore

Maybe she could even forward this star question to her mom/dad to help break the ice. You only have one set of eyes and they are too precious to waste any more time wondering what is wrong without having them checked-ask any blind person who had sight before they went blind. Most agree that blindness has heightened their other senses but that they miss seeing the small things-a sunset, a child's smile-the little things most of us take forgranted

I hope this helps!

Glasses are not that expensive, and it doesn't matter if they were when it comes to eye sight. I can't imagine parents not being aware of the problem. If she has to she can go to Wal Mart or some such place & try on reading glasses until she finds some that are suitable. She really needs to have an eye exam tho.

Sounds like she most certainly needs glasses :-)

A good way to tell is to ask her to read a sign quite a way away. If you can read it and she can't, she definately needs glasses. More minor vision problems aren't as easy to notice, but also cause headaches and sore eyes, especially after reading for a long time.

Is there anyone at your school she could talk to? At the school I work at we have eye exams available, and if it comes out bad the parents are called and the situation explained. If the parents can't afford glasses there are ways for the school to help get those, too.

If someone can't really see that great, they should go to the eye dr..Glasses don't have to be THAT expensive

Even if they aren't needed, an eye exam is only $25-40

You may want to start at "The Online Eye Test" and then go from there...

Take care of those eyes because we only have TWO!!

See the link below for further details.

Best wishes...

Eye vision test.

Either in those optical shops or with a doctor.

She most likely needs glasses or contacts. To continue this way can cause more problems. Either way, it wouldn't hurt to se an optometrist.
