I don't understand how BitTorrent works, Do I have to share the files I download or is it optional?

it's optional..but the creators of Bit Torrent programmed it so that the more you share your own files the faster your downloads will be...this is to cut down on leeching aka that downloading files but not sharing them.

It is optional but most sites encourage you to maintain at least a 1:1 ratio. That means that you should upload at least as much data as you download. This is to increase speed, ensure the torrent stays alive, and to discourage leeching.
