Hunters are using shotguns for hunting birds. The advantages of such weapon is a large area of atack lowering the need of aiming and rising the chance of stricking quicly turning target. What would you say about fighter armed with large “shotgun” loaded with shells with steal balls? The fighter would get on rocket track and shot in front of it (the speed of rocket would give needed impact). What would you say about rocket like cassette bombs shot on track of rocket to explode and prepear a cloud of mines (even simple steal balls)? What would you say about quite large magnetic mines launched on track of rocket to sabotage rocket electronics and magneticaly atract rocket to strike into mine (some kind of Electro-Magnetic Pulse mines)?

The shotgun approach goes back to the 1950's. The main air defense sysyem in the US during the Cold War was the Nike antiaircraft system - the Nike Ajax and the later Nike Hercules. The warheads on these were an explosive charge surrounded by thousands of steel cubes (cubes pack better than spheres). When the warhead detonated, these cubes were dispersed just like a shotgun. Some air to air systems used the same type of warhead, just smaller. The warhead details on the current antimissile systems are classified, but the designers certainly had this technology to draw on.

Chasing an incoming missile with a fighter does not work. The velocities are so different the fighter would not stand a chance. Magnetic systems are also doomed from the start - the gauss field required to have any effect at all would require someting far beyond any capabilty we have to get it off the ground, and even then the incoming missile would have to fly right into it - about one chance in a gazillion.

and the idea of a missile warhead to knock out incoming ballistic missiles is nothing new. Its called an anti-ballistic missile (ABM for short) and the development of ABM's was, quite bizarrely, forbidden by the terms of the anti-ballistic missile treaty of 1972. strange when you think that the governments stockpile all these weapons that can kill, and ban a weapon that might save lives
