Hi Trish, and first of all Congratulations for taking care of this dog, I myself have a dog that has been abandoned and mistreated, and it took some time to "heal" him both mentally and physically.

-1 HEAL THE MIND WITH AFFECTION:

If your dog whines it is not because something is especially wrong with him, but much like us because he is expressing the traumas of past situations: you say you "rescued" him, so whatever was threatening him (mistreatment, beating, verbal assaults from his former owner, etc.) left him with profound psychological scars that still haunt him night and day.

The solution is your affection, only by playing / hugging / talking to him nicely will you help him overcome the shocks of his previous experiences. I also suggest creating a very stable way of life, with DOs and DON'Ts, very organized schedules for everything, and not too many changes over the 1st year (avoid leaving for vacations and letting him all alone with strangers for instance).

- 2 REBUILD THE BODY WITH ACTIVITY:

Each dog has a different body, but for the Pitbull, muscle is especially important; they are all muscle. So he needs a tremendous amount of physical exercise to regain his muscle mass.

And I don't mean merely playing in your living room with your kids, I mean making him run like there's no tomorrow next to your bike for a few miles; and taking a solid wood stick in your hands and making him pull with all his strength (he'll love it, Pitbulls have immense power in their Jaws, neck and Shoulders).

This will not exhaust him, but will produce the craving for food he needs, and will awake his genetics that are made to build muscle.

- 3 GET PROFESSIONAL ADVICE:

I suggest taking him to the vet on a regular basis in order to get a complete opinion: maybe he will prescribe some food supplements for the beginning, and will make sure that his overall condition improves over time.

Good Luck and keep the good work, I am certain you will give this dog the will to fight and to become an impressive Pit !

I have a Pit rescue and she is very much a people person and still whines when she feels a need for attention. She was only three weeks old when I got her and needed a lot of care. She grew slowly but she did grow and bulked up naturally. She first fit in the palm of my hand and now weighs about 60 lbs which is very sturdy for her build, solid muscle.
She has a sensitive stomach to some meat types so she eats Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice dog food mixed iwth Pet Botanics Beef Log. This is something she loves.
She rarely gets table scraps and then I am very careful with what I give her. Your dog should bulk up naturally with good food and over time. The whining may very well be a call for attention. Mine is very vocal too. I don't have to worry about things like the water running out. She will let me know.
Things I occasionally add to her food:
A few spoons of either plain yogurt or cottage cheese.
a few spoons of pumpkin pie filling

She has lots of toys for exercising her teeth, like large Nylabones including a "Goliath" bone (synthetic), Kong from time to time, dog biscuits which are home made or store bought ones that are high quality and hard ones.

Your dog should naturally bulk up nicely as long as he is checked and treated for any conditions that could contribute to staying skinny, like parasites, worms etc.

I would personally reccommend that a pitbull that has been mistreated not be with a new family that has children. I am sure you have taken this into consideration, I only hope your decision does not back fire on you. I suggest you take your dog to the vet but I also suggest you read books by the dog whisperer and try to watch his television programmes. Also he has a web page: Just type in dog whisperer or Cesar Millan and you will find it. He has helped numerous pit bulls to be re-habilitated. I would never put my kids at risk but it's your decision. Your dog will grow but the scars may never heal (mental scars that is).

No table food! You want to put him on a healthy food such as Natures Recipe. Other dog foods such as Iams, Purina, Pedigree, Kibbles and Science Diet all include corn and by products in their ingredients. With Natures Recipe it is all natural and does not include any fillers, by products, corn, wheat or beef. He will be able to digest it all and gain weight.

Natures Recipe will give him a nice healthy body and a shinny coat. It will also help cut down shedding, bad breath and the amount of stool.

You can get this at your local Pet Smart or Pet Co.

Also just make sure you give him lots of loving and he will learn your not going to hurt him.

Most people believe that pit bulls are just mean biting machines,in actuality they can be very sweet. It might be good for the pup if you allowed food to be available to him at all times. The food should be dog food though table food is unhealthy for dogs. Some of the pit bulls I've came in contact with were also very vocal. You can't really know why he is whining. He might just want more attention or to play. Some of them love to be cuddled. It would be good if you could visit a vet they give the best advice!

well done in giving him a good loving home, first pl dont give him table food its not good for him,he needs his dog food not people food, you are doing great in reassuring him that you will not mistreat him,it will take alot of kindness and patience and make sure he has fresh clean water a few times a day plus dont over feed him give him 2 meals a day(medium size)plenty of dry food and if you want some codliver oil which is good for him, pitbull are vocal he is just communicating with you the only way he knows how give him lots of exercise and try not to leave him on his own for more than four hours.

Don't give table food. If you want him to bulk up a little more, put him on puppy food. It has more fat. Once he reaches the desired weight, switch back. I rescued a 7 month old Shep. mix whose ribs were showing when I got her..it took 2-3 months for her to bulk up.

First thing, feeding him table food is not good for him. Congrats for giving him a second chance. He is a lucky boy! My dogs are very vocal and usually I understand what it is they want. The closer the bond between you the more you will sense his moods and desires. He probably is still insecure and that should diminish with time. Its very important to make sure you teach him basic commands and obedience so that he will be a joy both to you and others. Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs when owned by good people.

u might want to take him to the vet and maybe they can recommend a type of medicine. and take him for walks. he might be a little weak from being mistreated by his old ownerso make sure he gets to play alot maybe take him to a dog park if he is not a biter!!!! And table food may be the worst thing to give him because it will make him whine and beg for more food and attention. Pits can be very wrestles at times. So becareful when u play with him!!!!!!!!!!! U should maybe buy a different food for him too maybe Iams Active Maturity wii help him if he is a little older. That is wat my dog eates, he is a Weimeraneir i think that is how u spell it, and when he doesnt he sometimes barfs and has aches and is some times a little on the smaller side. U can find this at Petsmart and i think Petco

That is such a nice thing to do! I agree with chipeso. He needs security and routine, it'll make him feel secure. To bulk him up, maybe you should not feed him too much, but work on him gaining muscle.
Good luck!
