I want to connect my video camera to my laptop which runs Windows. As far as I can see the firewires only refer to working on macs and so wonder if they can also be used on windows. If they can't what other cables can be used?

Firewire works on PCs but your PC needs a Firewire port. Firewire is also known as IEEE-1394 (or just 1394), so look in your computers manuals to see if it has one of those ports.

Firewire also have two several different sizes of ports, so you'll need to make sure you have the right cable.

A lot of Windows PCs have 1394 Firewire ports e.g. my Samsung X20 laptop.

Yes, and windows movie maker will use it.
But if you do not have a 1394 connection built into your computer, you will need a firewire PCI card.
