If you are settling for 2nd best than I don't think it can work out...you shouldn't have to settle for anything ...you either want to be with that person or you don't.
When you are with someone it should be whole heartedly and mutely 1st choice.
In my experience love doesn't grow if you are wishing you were with someone else.
all that will happen is you will see the bad bits of the person you are with and be comparing to 1st Choice subsequently making both yourself and partner unhappy.

If you can't have somebody, then you can't have them, simple as.
How can a person be the best option if there is no way of being with them? Surely the best option is the person who wants you as much as you want them.
I would never settle for anyone. If I was so wrapped up in a woman that I only wanted her, I would either have to have her, or get over her and find another girl to fall head over heels for. I'd never marry option 2 if I was crazy about an option 1, it would mess my life up.

Oh Dear,I think this is an easy solution,1.List all the qualities you like about No1 and No2.Use a seperate listing of all your own interests/qualities/traits and likes /dislikes.Match up the qualities of all 3 lists and match them in.Secondly,it depends upon their availibility, are they at school/ work/home/involved with another person,.You either like someone or you don't! Do not choose someone for the sake of having a boyfriend/girlfriend.Perhaps it is better to remain friends and keep all your options open .When one is young, it is better to take time with romance, enjoy the company of groups and friends,Experience teaches you about life and choices ,it is better to choose the one you really want!

Have a go with the second and see how you feel. You've probably put no. 1 on a pedestal and he wasn't that good anyway. You don't know someone till you've lived with them for 6 months.

well,
i had one gal(my gf) - whom i was crazy about and she was just strange and very cold to me and one (just a friend) who cared about me and respected me.
when it was the time to decide whether i shall try keeping my relationship (where i was not respected - the way i want) and a relationship where i was offered respect and love ----- i chose the one who loved me.
(What's the use having somebody who does not know how to sacrifice and share sorrow alongwith happiness in a relation)
