My mom visited me from africa and she's been living with me since Dec, 2005. Since I supported her all through the year and she was dependent on me, can I claim her as a dependent when filing my tax? The problem is she doesn't have a SSN and the IRS requires this to claim someone. Is there any other way I can do this?

No, you cannot claim anyone as a dependent who does not have a SSN. If she is eligible for one, she should apply for it quickly at the nearest Social Security office.

If she is not eligible for a SSN, she can apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) that you can then use on your tax return. She would apply for an ITIN by sending Form W7 to the IRS along with proof of her identity as required on the form. Here's a link to Form W7 on the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf
