The International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) (of which the UK Youth Hostel Assocations are members of) runs the Hostelling International (HI) brand of hostels. The hostels are of a very good standard (in fact hostels can only get the IYHF/HI badge if they meet certain standards). They are clean and safe staffed with friendly, professional staff.

The HI Hostels http://www.hihostels.co.uk/ have three hostels in Los Angeles listed. I don't know about the South Bay or Fullerton areas. Santa Monica is a safe area. It has a good beach and good nightlife. Although it is quite a distance from Hollywood and Beverly Hills, the buses run frequently enough and safe enough during the day for you to get around.

Avoid Venice Beach after dark. Like with most major US cities, there is no reason for tourists to go Downtown. Chinatown (next to Downtown) can also be avoided - there is little happening there and way too much effort to get there.

There are plenty of areas you should avoid. Get The Lonely Planet guide to LA - they recommend the best places.

Stay around Irvine where it's safe and just drive all over to your sight seeing destination. Your biggest problem will be being to excited and becoming overly friendly and the wrong people can sniff you guys out.
