There are conditioning sprays you can buy at the pet store that you put on their coat to keep it healthy. The conditioners will stop the static. Just don't apply it too often and only when static is bad, as your cat with be cleaning herself and you don't want her to ingest too much. Or, if you want to take the most economical route, just rub a little hand lotion on your hands and then rub your cat. This will help, too. Good luck.

Its not bad for a cat at all. I've had cats all my life. The cat i have now? Woke up this morning and static everytime. My cat jumps when it happens, wondering what the heck was that. I use fabric sheets as well, and it does not help. But had to stop using on her cat blanket that she uses. She is ellergic to some soaps and the fabric sheets. I'll be glad when spring arrives. This only happens during the cold months.
Good luck with a solution. But it does not harm the cat at all. Static that is. Sounds like you have a long haired cat. You will get more static.
Take care.

Sounds like you have alot of static going on in your house. Maybe its not just the cat. Try rasing the humidity in your house just a little bit. If your humidity level is under 30-40% then the air is a bit too dry and you will notice everything seems to cause static. The dryer sheet would work for the cat, but you can handle everything all at once with the humidity level.

In very dry weather, especially in the winter, you will get static buildup - no matter how much softener you use. I am not a scientist so I can't tell you why. The easiest thing to do is to get yourself a hudmidifier and put it in your bedroom and turn it on and keep it running steadily as long as it is dry. When the air gets moisture in it, the light show will stop and you can again pet your cat without zapping it. That will really help. It's what I do.

Rub the cat down with a dryer/softener sheet. Works great.

No, it won't harm your cat at all.
I've had cats all my life and have always had the static problem in the winter months....it's not a problem in the spring, summer or fall.

Our vet recommended getting dye and fragrence fee dryer sheets and wiping down our cat with it. It works alright for awhile, but she hates it.
