PitPen brings up the best point about contacting the patients' accounts office at the hospital. They have "free bed" programs for patients who have no insurance and limited resources to pay their bill. In the mean time, set up a mutually-satisfactory repayment arrangement with them. This will avoid them taking you to court. Keep in touch with them and keep up with your payments and they will not bother you.

I really doubt it. Contact the hospital, some of them have charities that you can apply for to help cover costs. They can also help you set up a payment plan. But after so long they will turn it over to a collection agency.

Yes - as long as you make regular payments (meaning, you send them money EVERY month) that's plenty to keep your account out of collection - you're making an honest attempt to pay the bill.

As long as you are attempting to pay the bill , It is hard for them to prosecute you. Provided you don't have the assets to pay it off.
