Jesus was an infant when these gifts were received. He did not stay in Nazareth very long. A trip was made to Egypt and other locations. Travel expenses are nothing new and I am sure Joseph and Mary used these gifts to insure safe passage. Those were dangerous times in the Fertile Crescent, as they are now.

You're close -- they didn't "squander" it, but I'm sure they used the money to fund their voyage to Egypt shortly after the wise men left. They also would have needed funds to live off of when they got there, since they stayed several years. Then there was the long journey back.

EDIT: "Handpuppetpet," Jesus and his family were poor -- the Bible states they were. The sacrifice Mary offered at Luke 2:24 proves this, since she offered the sacrifice required by the poor; see Leviticus 12:8.

This poverty is a paradox and my understanding of it is that Jesus was materially poor to reflect the spiritual poverty that was not obvious in a material world. He fed thousands with a few loaves and fish...consider that.
Put another way, there comes a point (reflected in today's society as well) when the wealthy get more for free that the poor. Supermodels/ famous people are paid by designers and given loads of freebies for associated promotion purposes - it's age old. Perhaps the wise men recognized Jesus' wealth and wanted to be in his good books!

You are like a lot of other misinformed troubled souls, when you believe Jesus was poor. He was a builder, and lacking a home center, or 84 lumber yard, went where the cedars grew to get wood, and where the bricks were forged, and where the stone was cut. He carried a purse, or worker that was a purchasing agent of his. Maybe even was extended credit, as his slendid reputation was shinning before men, even before the formal start of his ministry. Jesus was rich dude! He dealt with the wealthy, and the poor alike. Pansy candy @sses like to believe he was a poor vagabond wandering drifter, with a peace sign on his forhead, looking for a place to crash. Pity them!1

He was very rich, otherwise he wouldn't have done it. He could manufacture money, food, drinks clothes and on top of all that he was a carpenter. He was a shrewed salesman. This are facts, not some joke. Read the bible and find this less spoken about truth!
