Wands are not necessary, but yes, you can make your own. Must be purified, consecrated, etc. I'll e-mail info to you later today, if you'd like.

Wand
Most people think of wands as long wooden branches with a big stone on the end. Your wand can be any material you feel drawn to (wood, metal, bone). Your wand is the tool of Air, and is used to direct energy during ritual. Wands tend to be the one tool that most Wiccans are likely to make themselves.

How To Make Your Own Magick Wand
By Linda Seekins

In making my wand, I cut it from a larger branch
that was cut from a cedar tree that had to be trimmed
back anyway, so it was not taken unnecessarily.

I removed the attached twigs and debarked it and
allowed it to dry for about a week. Then I sanded
down the nubs left from the twigs until it was smooth.

After this, I carved two curving bands about half an
inch wide entertwining around the wand from top to
bottom, one going clockwise and the other
counterclockwise, similar to the serpents on the
caduceus. These are carved in relief so as to look
as though they were wrapped around the wand.

Then I carved a socket about a quarter inch deep in
the tip into which I set a perfectly clear,one-and-a-half-inch long, natural crystal, using a little glue to hold it in place. The entire length, including the crystal, is fifteen inches.

I oiled the wand using simple mineral oil which isn't
likely to go rancid and then using a soft cloth, rubbed it until it gleamed.

Finally, I purified and conscrated the wand in the circle. I made a tube-shaped bag out of red velvet lined with red silk with a red satin drawstring to close it (red is the color of fire), into which I
slide the wand to keep it safe and away from contamination.

Throughout the entire process, from when I first cut the wand to the end of the process, I concentrated on it being a tool of power and of the fire element, made in honor of the Goddess and the God who are represented by the intertwining bands.

Although this was a lot of work, I feel it was worth it, for it is a powerful tool. It has been my opinion that the more effort you put into making a tool, the more powerful it is, for the energy and
concentration you expend goes into it.

I also have a cedar staff that is the same height that I am, which came from the same cedar branch, but I haven't done anything more than sand it smooth and oil it as yet.
I hope that this was helpful.

You don't *need* a wand, but its nice to have one!
Making your own infuses it with your own personal energy which is very powerful! Different trees have different means, and its said you should be drawn to a branch which you are going to make into a wand. Also, it should be a branch that has fallen, not one that you break off. When making your wand, just think good, positive thoughts and what kind of energetic properties you'd like your wand to have. Good Luck!

No you don't need one, depends on your purpose ans what you are doing. I have one friend who whittled his own because he came across a piece of woo that called to him. I have another who has a stick of quartz crystal, she had been practicing 15 years before she came across it and again it called to her too.

Whatever you choose make it something personal don't just pick up a stick someone has engraved a pentacle into and is trying to sell you as a 'wand' - its not. Than you must cleanse and bless it before you use it in any ritual.

Most of all enjoy the process

A wand is a way of focusing on directing energy.. it is not necessary, as magic comes from within.

You can purchase them, or you can make your own.
If you're going to make your own, please do not cut from a living tree; obtain one from a fallen branch instead. It needs to be consecrated, and you can decorate it however you choose.

Need? No
Is it nice to have something to use as an external focus for ones will? Yes

Can you make one? Yes, it should be dedicated and consecrated as a tool for that purpose.

There are many magical weapons... the wand is one... you make it, consecrate it... destroy it. Of course, I'm not a wiccan... maybe they are a four-weapon-only-type troupe.

I sincerely hope you won't give in to the temptation to take this road. God knows your needs, and it would be far better for you to trust Him and seek His will—because His will is always perfect. Why do I advise you against this? You could be opening yourself to spiritual forces and powers that do not come from God, but from Satan. This is why the Bible tells us to avoid occult practices of any type—including Wicca. The Bible warns, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against ... the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12). I hope you will take this warning seriously.

Instead, I urge you to turn to Jesus Christ and ask Him to come into your life. God loves you, and Christ died for you and rose from the grave for you. Don't turn down the wrong road, but turn to God and by a simple prayer of faith commit your life and your future to Jesus.
