Well if you can hold a strand of hair in your hand and look at it closely, you will either see a frayed end showing splitting, or you will see a sharp point showing it is in good shape...
And your hair should feel and look soft and smooth instead of dry and flyaway...
It should feel nice to touch...

your hair is damaged when your hair is dry, feels like a broomstick, still messy after you comb it..
