We just got a 2 month old Bichon, and the people that we got him from said to us that he was pure. They are breeders, but this puppy and another one were sent from another breeder to them to sell. Some people say he looks like a Maltese, or a combination of Bichon and Maltese. If someone can help me I'd really appreciate it.

HI,
I sell dogs for breeders and they are pure breeds they just can't get out and do it, you can compare pictures of yours with others on the internet or take him to the vet they could tell you but not for sure.

An 8 week old Bichon pup doesn't look like the groomed adult Bichon Frise in the breed pictures. You have to take the breeders word for it if you didn't get AKC papers with the pup. Also ask the breeder questions if you are unsure of anything to do with the pup. No one here can advise you which end is up, not enough info on the puppy purchased.

You probably cant be sure, but here is a copy of the breed standard, which pure bred bichons should comply with. Have a read of it and see how closely he compares http://www.akc.org/breeds/bichon_frise/index.cfm
and look at pictures of pure bichons. Thats probably all you can do. Thats the unfortunate fact of there being so many disreputable breeders around these days. Also, as he is so young, his looks may well change, so just wait a while and see how he turns out :)

Why do you want to breed? Having a litter is A LOT of work and a lot of money. Do you feel your dog is worthy of breeding? Just because it's papered doesn't mean it should be bred. Instead of having a whole litter, look at getting a 2nd dog from a breeder and having them both neutered/spayed. There are too many dogs in the world, we don't need anymore backyard breeders.

Ask your veterinarian if he or she thinks your dog is purebred. Or, find a very good Bichon breeder and ask them if they think your dog is purebred. I bought a chihuahua a few months ago from a breeder, and some of my friends and family didn't think she was purebred. But she is AKC registered and has a champion father, which I know for a fact. So, not everyone knows what their talking about... Lol!!

Good Luck,

If there are no registration papers (and I mean from the Amer. or Canadian Kennel Club) then I'd be very suspicious. . . also, did you see your pups parents when you went to the breeder?? If not, that would also make me suspicious. Did you see this breeders kennels, and other dogs?? It sounds a little shady - sorry to have to tell you this, but if you didn't see the parents, and they didn't have registration papers for your pups parents, nor for your pup it sounds like a puppy mill puppy.

Did you get AKC papers to register your dog? If so then it is for sure a pure breed.
