Yes 24½ years ago. A friend and I stopped in this town in western Wyoming just off I-80. If it wasn't hell on earth it was damned close.

No, not in a literal sense, and I don't believe anybody else has, either. Perhaps, figuratively speaking, people have felt like they have been (or are) in hell, but not on an absolute literal level.

the story I heard was there was a Marine ( although this would fit any military, police or firefighter ) who reported to St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. the Marine said to St. Peter, " One more Marine reporting, Sir, I've served my time in Hell. "
