Hydrocarbons generally contain water vapour - removed by dehydration processes (absorption or adsorption into desiccants); Sour gases (H2S, CO2 etc) - also removed by the same type of processes using specific substances.

H/C's also contain dust, debris, scale and other unwanted solid particles - removed by filtration.

Unwanted H/C's can be removed using activated charcoal.

Any H/C's in the atmosphere are considered pollutants.
