Much depends on where you purchased the dog from. Was it a business such as a pet store, or a licensed breeder? Was there a contract or at the very least, a bill of sale? Have you approached them about wanting your money back? If they refund your money, you know that you will have to give them the dog back, right? If you want to keep the dog, then the best you could get would be in effect a rebate of some of the money you paid. If you purchased the dog from a private party without a contract specifically stating that you are buying a purebred dog, then it is pretty much caveat emptor, buyer beware/buy at your own risk.
Now, if it was bought from a licensed business, you can contact the Better Business Bureau and ask for them to intercede on your behalf. They do not have the power to force the seller to do anything, but it will become a public record against their 'good name'.
If it was a private party you may be able to get them into trouble if you can prove that they are selling puppies on a regular basis and are not licensed to do so. You will have to find out what the laws are in your state/city regarding animal sales. The Humane Society or the ASPCA may be able to point you in the direction of where to find this out, and they may even be of greater help, but I cannot state this with any authority.
If all civil attempts are a bust, then there is always taking them to small claims court. Be sure to document all your efforts (this includes receipts of all monies spent) of attempting a resolution up to and including your lawsuit. You most likely will have to have a statement from your vet that the dog is NOT whatever it was purported to be. You may have to have DNA tests done to prove this. Remember, if you want all of your money back, you will have to surrender the dog back to the seller. Be sure to include the filing fees for your court case in the amount you are suing for. Any monies you are asking to be re-imbursed for will have to be documented by a receipt of some kind, not just your word.
Good luck.

Having bred dogs, I am curious how you know the dog isn't purebred. If it is papered, report this incident to the AKC. If it is not papered, the dog would have to look pretty obviously different than expected to win an award in court. If you paid under $500 for the dog, this matter would best be handled in small claims court.

It really depends on what you wish to do.. If you are already attached to your dog, then you'd probably not want to have to return him. If he is purebred, then you should have the papers to prove his ancestry and he should be registered with a proper kennel club right? Go check with them. If they inform you that they have no such record of your dog, then report your breeder to the kennel club. They'll be able to advise you on the necessary and legal actions you can take. He/she will also lose her license to breed and compete her dogs. But if the papers are all in, then you most probably do have a purebreed dog - only he does not conform to the competition stabdards. I have two ragdoll cats. Both purebred with papers. One is from a champion line, the other is not competition quality, I love them both but they do look very different from each other.

I suggest you phone the police. You have been cheated out of your money. I would also speak to the people you purchased the dog from.
