Scientists at the Danish National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) and the University of Aarhus are the leaders of an international research team that is presenting ground-breaking news this week in the renowned journal Nature. These researchers have found small animals on the sea floor that breathe nitrate instead of oxygen. This means the textbooks will have to be rewritten – as regards both the nitrogen cycle and the ability of animals to survive without oxygen.

Some types of pikes can be frozen inside ice for several months without breathing, but no creatures that go with out breathing, sorry. By the way, I don't count bacteria as creatures.

Yes, there are loads of creatures that don't need oxygen. Thankfully, yeast can ferment their sugar for energy instead of using oxygen so we have such wonderful things as bread, beer, and wine!

i'm not certain but i think that their are types of sea creatures who live in the deepest of waters who require very little oxygen to breathe. if not at all and use properties from the water to stay alive instead.

Yes, they are bacteria called obligate anaerobes, and are poisoned by oxygen. Instead of oxygen, they use some other molecule as a terminal electron acceptor.
