Hi, I have a 97 VW Polo which when kept in the garage overnight starts fine. However when i leave it overnight outside and its cold and there is moisture in the air its a nightmare to start. When eventually it does start it misfires until she heats up. I have replaced the HT leads and plugs and checked the distributor cap but this has not helped, any ideas

Check the air intake flap. It should be taking air in from over the exhaust when the engine is cold and from the "front" when the engine is warm. If it's stuck in the "warm" position then the engine is trying to slurp in cold air with consequent results on the air/fuel mixture. Had a similar problem on an 1800cc Audi.

Myself driving only Polo's from1995 .
it seems that if moissture is the reason u need to do a visble spark leak in darkenss
do this check with another person:
park otside your garage in a dark place, while moitsure is max.
in full darkness - let your friend run start [[with not pressing on excellerator]]
While you look inside the motor !!do not touch!!
watch carefully the ignition sys. for observed "sparking" out the cables or the dis. cap. and find out where the spark run out - this will direct you improoving insolation or BSTS replacing the 5 cables.
they may be old & dry- therefore may leak sparks out and prevent starting.

The reason you hear backfires is from having over fueled sys. & rest runs out to the exhaust monyfold.
in the event of first start, all the rest is fired in the exhaus chamber.
------
Another reason to a behavioir as such comes from bad valve adjstment / bad timing belt.(must be Replaced every xxxxx Miles)
hope I helped you out from that far [I'm from Israel]

Our old Polo had that problem. A light spray of WD40 chases moisture away and helps with starting. My partners dad put a blanket over the engine at night to help with this too.

If it has a distributor cap and rotor that haven't been changed in 25,000 miles or more, you might as well replace them to be sure your not losing spark in the distributor.

would desire to be an argument with the immobiliser? - yet probable diagnostics might have got here across an argument with that. Otheriwise subject concerns with the Engine administration equipment. Diagnostics dosn't %. each little thing up all of the time. in the adventure that your with a AA/RAC, as quickly because it starts off playing up lower back call them right this moment. with a bit of luck their diagnostics would desire to %. it up. would desire to no longer artwork inspite of the shown fact that. .
