The AK 47 may have the greatest manufactured, but it has several shortcomings. The main advantage of the AK 47 is its ability to take abuse. And, it's cheap.

But, the best all around assault rifle is the M16 and its many civilian versions. It is available in different calibers: 223, 7.62x39, 308. You can reload your own or purchase any number of bullet configurations. Plus you can purchase 22LR conversion kits for inexpensive practice.

I don't believe there is a rifle made with as many options as the M16 or AR15. There are different magazine types. You can purchase with floating barrels and with different lengths. Plus, with all of the rail attachments, you can attach lights, range finders, different types of scopes, and lasers.

The accuracy and range is excellent. With 223 about 400 meters. The 308 is great to 700 meters. I'm not sure about the 7.62.

Kalashnikov AK-47 has sold most because of durability. Drop it in mud / water, pick it up and it will fire. It is not the best though. After several magazines, the barrel will heat up and the heat will conduct and make the weapon too warm to hold. If the user then puts gloves on and continues, the chamber can get so hot that the rounds can fire before they leave the gun - not nice. So, it's an adaptable weapon, but not very practical if you want to spray people for long times. For continuous use, both the SLR and SA80 will be more effective - better over distance too.

There are so many now, it's hard to say. In the 1920's it would have to be the Thompson .45 machine gun. In the WW2 era, I'd say the browning AR or still the Thompson. I think the most popular assault rifle in the world is and has been for a long time, the Russian AK in all it's variations. And rightfully so.

Boy, this one is sure subjective. Mikhail Kalashnikov's AK-47 is one of, if not the most, produced and copied battle rifle manufactured in the world. The rifle is not a paragon of accuracy, but a battlefield rifle need not be so. The action/firing mechanism is resistant to blockages & misfires due to poor lubrication and lack of cleaning. I have personally witnessed a Chinese made AK-47 submerged in swamp mud, retrieved and fired with only a cursory "shake" to clear the action of big chunks.

The AK is crap it is designed for idiots to use, selection lever is S safe, A auto then single it's cheap made and cheap, the fact that you can use and abuse is irrelevant the rifle is crap about as accurate as a Russian watch, I once met a Iraq soldier as I turned the corner of a building he spotted me before I saw him he opened up with at least 10 rounds at 500m not one came close...One round M16A2 dropped him for good head shot right in the left eye,I once dropped a 40mm HE Genade into building that was occupied by 4 Iraqi soldiers right through the window 1st floor at 500m later when we cleared it it splated everyone, My rifle saved me on many occasion...

That was my Baby M16A2 keep it clean and that girl will always look after you.....Then strap on a 40mm Death launcher and your holding GOD in your hands...Yes my American Friends this the be all and end all this is the Best Assault Rifle you ever built....

For simplicity and durability, the ruggedness of the AK47 may be able to compete for the title of best assault rifle ever made.

What's the best tool in your toolbox? A screwdriver isn't much good for driving a nail. They're just tools, and the answer depends on what task you're asking of it.
For poorly trained troops in general use, the AK-47 or AK-74 is nearly idiot-proof, if the NCO doesn't mind using his pistol to enforce fire discipline. The FN-FAL and the G3 are pretty fine weapons if you don't have to lug them around too much. But overall, for general use, my pick would be the M4 carbine chambered for the 6.8mm SPC.

while the M16M1A1 is a good one it jams far to much in bad conditions its great for places like here in the USA if some country invaded us i would say it is a good weapon to choose bt the reliability of the AK47 in most situations is much better its not prone to jamming in desert situations like the M16M1A1 and while the M16M1A1 may be better outof the desert i would still rather have an AK47 because like i said there much more reliable though M16M1A1 jam out of the desert as well its rare for an AK47 to jam at all

The AK 47, cheap, reliable, and easy to produce. But it's biggest fault is its accuracy. At 300 meters the broadside of a barn is difficult to hit. But it's good for firefights in the city.

my first guess would be the AK 47 although the best special forces in the world the British SAS choose to use the American m16 and m4 i think they would probably know better than most.
