What I seldom do---------copy and paste. But, there is so much here on the Shia leader:
An analysis of the characteristics Of Imam Hussein(PBUH)
With the arrival of the mourning month of Moharram and
the anniversary of the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussein
((PBUH)), the Prophet's grandson and the third Imam of his
household, millions of faithful hearts round the world are
once again brimming with love and devotion for the
immortal ideals of the hero who staged the greatest epic
that history has ever witnessed.
In ceremonies marking history's glorious stand against
injustice and oppression, Imam Hussein and his life-giving
ideals continue to be commemorated all the more
magnificently by the seekers of truth and freedom.
in The 5 century AH , Ebne Asaker mentions in his
monumental work, The History of Damascus', that once
Prophet Mohammad, (Blessings of Allah be upon him and
his progeny), entered the mosque of Medina with his
younger grandson Imam Hussein astride his shoulders.
Holding the young Hussein's feet close to his chest, the
Almighty's last Prophet told the gathering: "Oh people, this
is Hussein ebn-e Ali, who has the most excellent ancestor,
His grandfather is Mohammad the Messenger of Allah, the
greatest of divine prophets, while his mother is Khadijah
bente Khwailid, the first woman to believe in Allah and His
Prophet. This Hussein ebn-e Ali has the most excellent
parents. His father Ali ebn-e Abi Taleb is the brother,
the minister, and the cousin of the Prophet of God and the first
man to believe in Allah and His Prophet, while his mother,
Fatema bent-e Mohammad is the leader of the ladies of the
world for all time."
Then as Ebn-e Asaker says, the Prophet focused on the rest
of Imam Hussein's family connections, and after lifting him
from his shoulder and gently placing him on the ground, he
said:"Oh people, the ancestors of this Hussein, are in the
heavens, so are his uncle and aunt, so will be him and his
brother."
In analyzing the characteristics of Imam Hussein, more than
any other of his divine qualities, it is the bravery and the
greatness of his soul which attracts the attention. We thus
understand that Imam Hussein was someone whose
objective in life and his holy uprising against injustice was
far from satisfying his personal needs and interests. His
noble soul, was and remains, unique throughout the history.
His humbleness, valour, magnanimity, faith, sincerity and
love for justice, are certainly without a match. With such
impeccable personal qualities he cannot be considered as
an ordinary person. In fact, Hussein, as the Prophet
introduced him to his companions, was being presented to
humanity as an heir and leader of a great and rich culture.
He was someone who devoted his life for the purpose of
reviving the forgotten values of faith, justice and freedom
in the community.
Justice in the society is as vital as fresh air
is for the lungs, without which life would be impossible.
Those who work towards the establishment of justice in the
society leave others indebted to them for their great service
and Imam Hussein ((PBUH)) is without doubt the leader of
all such brave people.
Hussein shouldered the tasks of the Prophets of the past,
and for this reason he is rightly considered as an heir and
legatee to such divine prophets as Adam, Noah, Abraham,
Moses, Jesus and Mohammad (peace be upon them). These
are persons who had supreme faith in the Almighty
Creator alone. The peace and security they felt could only
be described as a result of their strong faith in God. Imam
Hussein, who was an heir to these great messengers of God,
is not only an example of greatness for mankind, but is also
a symbol of bravery, patience and resistance in the face of
the worst systems of injustice. True sacrifice in the way of
God could only be truly described by Imam Hussein's stand
at Karbala. This great Imam based all his thoughts on the
path of God and the revival of forgotten ideals of religion
and humanity.
He started a revolution in which justice, peace, truth and
valour were the main ideals, and by attaining glorious
martyrdom he came out victorious in conditions which no
tongue had the power to express opposition. He bravely
fought the hordes of Yazid, the Omayyud tyrant, and gave
an everlasting lesson to humanity for all time.
Taking into consideration the respect in which Imam
Hussein was held by even soldiers of Yazid's army, one can
explain the reason for their hesitation in coming face to face
with the Third infallible Imam.
Some of them had heard the Prophet say time and again
that "Hussein is from me and I am from Hussein."
Prominent Muslims, such as Zayd Ben Arqam, have
narrated that the Prophet, when lying sick, turned to his
immediate family that is his daughter Fatima, her husband Ali
and the couple's two sons Hassan and Hussein (peace be
upon them), and said:"I am at war with anyone who fights
you and I am at peace with any one who is at peace with
you.
But for the soldiers of Yazid's army, even though they
remembered many of the Prophet's words in praise of Imam
Hussein, the tempting pleasures of the transient world and
the empty promises of the ruling regime had blackened
their hearts. Hardly fifty years after the passing away of the
Prophet, his words had been forgotten. It has been
mentioned in SahiCbkhari on the authority of Anas Ebn-e
Malek, who says:" I had been to Obeidollah Ebn-e Ziyad the
cruel governor of Kufa when the holy head of Imam Hussein
ebn-e Ali was placed in a basin. Ebn-e Ziyad pointed at the
nose and the face of the martyred Imam and said that he had
never seen a more beautiful face. I said: Ebn-e Ziyad, don't
you know that Imam Hussein, resembled the holy Prophet
of Islam, the most?"
Imam Hussein, the third Imam of the Prophet's infallible
household was thus martyred by the forces of injustice in
61 AH at Karbala But his martyrdom acted like a catalyst,
and revived the humanitarian ideals which the tyrant Yazid
had sought to suppress. The Prophet's grandson triumphed
in martyrdom, and continued to teach to generations the
values of freedom and justice and the need to confront
oppression
