Back in the summer I has this "attack" where I had sharp stabbing pains in the middle of my chest (I think it would be my sternum). I had about 3 of these over about an 8 hour shift at work, and a couple of them hurt so much and became worse when I breathed in so I was left bending over holding my breath until it passed. So when I saw my doctor in november, my symptoms were as followed: Sharp stabbing pains during these "attacks" that I didn't think lasted more than 5 minutes. They seem to be happening about 1 a day or so, not all being so severe I couldn't breathe, but still hurt.
I have these "attacks" numerous times of day, and on top of that my sterum feels like someone's just punched it. It's hurt ALL day today, really sore, and little pressure to is causes pain. I can no longer lay on my stomache for about more than 5 minutes with a pillow under my chest to read a book or use my computer because the pain hurts to much.
If anyone knows what this may be, please let me know. Thanks!

Probably Angina - See your doctor asap.

That kinda sound like what I had, and it was my gallbladder believe it or not! But, I also had stones and they were stuck. They first told me that I had and ulcer and gave me meds and sent me home. Then the next trip they said I had pluracy - which is where your lungs dry out. And finally, one doc. figured it out. Tons of gallstones stuck and I was admitted for emergency surgery. Hope this helps.

Try a search on ischemic chest pain.

What did your doctor say? Presumably thats why you went to see him/her. If you need a second opinion its better to go to another doctor than to ask here!
