Generally you can leave and live overseas for a long period of time if you want. Some of it does depend on the immigration laws of the country you want to live in.
I have been in Korea for 3 years (non-military) and I have to have a visa to stay here long term.
Once you get to the country you want to live in, it's always a good idea to register yourself with the US Embassy or Consulate in that country. It isn't required, but is a good idea just in case something happens.

Look before you listen to all these posts, there is such a thing as abandoning your citizenship. Look go to www.uscis.gov and there is information on that site about all these issues. Then contact a good immigration attorney, he will adise you of all the process. Do not think you can leave this country for a year or two and just be admitted back, I am sorry you will be in for a lot of heartbreak and drama. Read the information on the uscis.gov site and please talk to a good immigration attorney.

Komme nach Deutschland (come to germany) you have almost the same rights as the american people and we are a very easy country to apply for residencey. Also, I would save some money before moving because it may be a while before you can work here in Germany.

Buy a plane ticket. It really depends on the country you're moving to and what their immigration laws are.

Get a passport pack up and leave. The beauty of the US is that it is a free country and you can leave any time.
