Some of you people are idiots. Hard chrome done by a decent company is extremely durable. Will chrome show scratches? Yes name a frick'n finish that doesn't. Many ar-15 barrels are chrome lined so you know that has to be durable. There might be some finishes that are more durable than chrome. Most aren't and how are you going to know which ones are?Chrome does not have to be super shiny. You can get satin finishes.

When I was having my limited gun built (my baby) I had some people tell me not to get it chromed and had some say to get it chromed. The difference between the two groups was experience. I got it chromed.

First, the only pistols that are "hard chromed" are "Saturday Night Special" JUNK. Quality weapons are NICKEL plated, not chromed, which involves a process in which metal parts are polished, then copper plated before the nickel plating is applied.
As to a decision between finishes, it would depend on what use you would have for the piece. A weapon for everyday carry would probably be better with a matte type baked on finish for a less reflective profile, whereas a fancier finish for a more attractive look, go with the NICKEL plating.

Chrome finishes are after-market and the good ones can be very durable. Baked finishes will eventually wear.

Polished chrome will show every scratch and dust particle very clearly. One manufacturer claims the finish will remove blemishes just by rubbing. Chrome for a show piece, bake on for a gun that will see some wear.

A Nickle finish will scratch easily and is not going to last as long as a Duracoat/baked on finish. Another major draw back to to a Nickle finished gun is that if it is true nickel and not polished stainless it is much much more expensive to refinish when necessary. Unless you are a pimp, baked on finishes are better.
