At 4mph a bike and rider combination of 100kg (220lb) will use about 10 watts of power. For 2.5 miles this equals 5377 calories.
The average human is only about 24% efficient so therefore will burn about 22 404 calories to supply this.

There is little wind resistance at this speed so a direct ratio of rider/bike weight to calories would not create much error.

Food is usually measured in Kilo calories which causes heaps of confusion. Calorie counters on exercise bikes are rarely accurate

it all depends on the environment and weight of the rider. Eg a narrow downhill may burn more callories than a uphill highway. due to the fear involved. The more u weigh the more calories you will burn. But i would say jogging is better alternative that cycling if u wanna burn calories. If u do decide to cycle change ur speed of cyclcing sprint for 8seconds then go moderate for 12seconds that way you get into a fat burning stage. Trust me this makes a lot of difference up to 3 times as much calories are burnt.

Not enough even to count. A average biker goes 17-18 miles per hour, so that is like biking for 15 minutes.

Depends on your weight but for a 150 lb person they would burn 675 calories.

I can PUSH my bike faster than that ! You need to get up to at least 10Mph to do any good. I try for 15-20Mph myself. Good riders can cruise at 25Mph. We have guys in this area who can actually keep up with traffic. And as the other person stated, getting off the computer is a good start..
