The really best way is to visit a dental surgeon but should you not have one to hand for infection or swelling hot salt water mouth wash to the affected area works wonders coupled with nurofen every four hours which can be interspersed with paracetamol 2 hours after the nurofen.Never ever put an aspirin near the effected site as suggested by someone else as the aspirin will burn the gums and leave a nasty sore.yes it cures the toothache because you end up swallowing it as its dissolves in your saliva!!!!For sensitive teeth fluoride mouthwash or sensitive teeth toothpastes work but usually the real cause is over zealous brushing causing gums to be abraded away exposing sensitive dentine so lighten up on the brush.also if you have receding gums a diet that is very acid such as lots of fruit juice or fizzy pop will make your teeth tingle some what!!but at the end of the day regular visits to your dentist should hopefully cut down the risk of toothache!!

Whisky is the number one remedy I have found. **NO I don't mean drink it to be drunk silly** take a partial shot of whisky and hold it in your mouth near or on the tooth as long as you can handle it. What happens is the alchohol absorbs into the area and numbs it, along with disinfects it. While you have some relief during this. Take this chance to take pain killers AND some sort of anti-inflamatory (ibuprophin). Then if it is an infection and you can't afford to go to the doctor or emergency room. There is a little known resource for anti-biotics at the pet store.

The same thing that treats infection in fish tanks is what is in human anti-biotics (in fact I heard that fish anti-biotics are just recycled out dated hospital surplus). I found a rather large bottle of erethromycin on a pet store web site. BUT be careful look up the name before you take it, make sure it is of a type that is also used on humans.

**edit** Also do a search on whisky and tooth related issues. I do remember seeing that with what it is made of and how it is brewed, it lessons the chance of further infection. Unlike beer, which is rotted organic material. Some other hard drinks are also rotted organic material. But whisky isn't if I remember right.

I don't really know if these people are talking about toothache or TOOTHACHE, which is a constant and worsening pain caused by infection which reduces it's victims to despair. The remedy is antibiotics or extraction, or both if the former is ineffective. Get to the dentist!

Clove oil is a great remedy but not a long term solution. My dentist said it is toxic (or similar) and will eventually cause major gum problems.

So for short term relief if it's really bad use clove oil to sooth instantly, but at less serious times use the other remedies.

In long term, see your dentist, even if you don't like them you;ll probably get to the point where the pain outweighs any dislike for them.

Lucky for you i have had several toothaches. Believe it or not flossing will help a lot and instantly!!! Also sugarless gum will help soothe the tooth. Both will initially hurt but i swear it will work. Good luck at the dentist.

TRUST ME ON THIS ONE, I HAVE A TOOTHACHE RIGHT NOW, AND THIS IS THE ONLY REMEDY I HAVE FOUND ON HERE THAT WORKS FOR ME. GET A TEA BAG AND WET IT, ITS WORKS BETTER IF YOU RUN IT UNDER HOT WATER INSTEAD OF COLD, COLD STUFF SEEMS TO IRRITATE MY TOOTH MORE. AND JUST PUT THE WARM TEABAG IN YOUR MOUTH WHERE YOUR TOOTHACHE IS. JUST BE PREPARED THOUGH WHEN YOU FIRST PUT IT IN YOUR MOUTH, CAUSE THE TEA BAG WILL BE WET, AND YOU MOUTH WILL QUICKLY FILL UP WITH TEA. ITS HANDY TO HAVE A PAPER TOWEL NEAR BY TO SPIT IT OUT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SWALLOW IT!

Try biting down on a wet teabag with the affected tooth, the tannin in the teabag helps numb the pain. Tastes nasty, but I've had a bit of relief from it in the past.
