It's one of those catch-all breakup lines that's used the whole world over when you want to break up with someone. Most of the time I suspect that it's just the cowards way of telling someone you used to care about that you don't feel the same way any more.
But has anyone ever used this phrase on a boyfriend/girlfriend and actually meant what they said? Ie that you really do like the person, but that because of circumstances you just feel you need to be by yourself right now. To anyone who's ever used this line, what did you really want to say to your bf/gf?

I have used that line, or a form of it - and YES I did mean it. I had so much going on in my life with work, my family, friends, my puppy, other activities that I was being selfish to hanging onto to someone who wanted more than I could give them. I did like them, but at that point in my life I had to let a relationship go and concentrate on other things that I had going on. I actually think that I showed more respect to them by breaking it off so they could have a chance to find someone who could focus more on them.

Take it from someone who knows, tell the truth, as they say it will set you free... It won't be easy on the other person no matter what you say if they don't want to end the relationship.... If you use some lame excuse then you have to just keep reiterating the point.... Just be truthful... But most important, be truthful to yourself...
Make a list, & put down ALL the reasons that you want to be with this person, then a list of why you want to be by yourself.... I personally have been divorced now for almost 3 years, & I still feel as if I am not ready... I was married for 22 years, so I have spent the last 3 trying to meet & greet myself, cause how can you be true to someone when you don't know who "you" are? If it is meant to be, it will....
Good luck....

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

to a boyfriend?? no...wouldnt that be a separation or break up?
i suppose it could also be a line to say to someone youre not interested in pursuing a relationship with them or maybe the line means the person truly wants to be alone for whatever reasons.

I haven't said it to anyone before, but the guy that I've been dating for the past year and a half has said it to me a few times and I didn't quite understand it.

I used it once and that was when I did not want to be with
him anymore. I just did not want to hurt his feelings by him
thinking that he was not good enough or that I wanted some-one else. It was an excuse. I don,t think it's a cowards way.
