i know the Great Wall of China is thousands of miles long but if a person wanted to walk it; could they? Or are some sections closed off due to preservation? Also, how do you get to the wall? Do you have to hike to it?

I have walked the Great Wall and it an experience. I know they are redoing parts of it now, you you may not be able to walk the entire span. You get to the wall by going to Beijing and taking a tour. It is about an hour outside of the city. You take a bus or van to a parking area at the base of the wall. Parts of it are very touristy now. Gift shops and vendors all around. Be in shape if you choose to walk it. It has incredible inclines, some at close to a 35% angle. It is a difficult walk in place, but so worth it.

Walking the "whole wall" is really difficult, because the actual wall was built in bits and pieces. There have been a few people who have "done it", but I still don't know the technical definition. And yes, there are parts that are simply crumbling, especially as you go up all the way to Northern Gansu province, where it ends. But it is an interesting experience to see different parts of the wall-- I have been to as far East as Beidaihe and as far West as Northern Gansu province.

To walk along a piece of the wall, the best thing to do is NOT to go to Badaling. It's the closest to Beijing, but VERY CROWDED and virtually no "non-preserved" sections-- which means mostly 10-year-old gray brick. From Beijing, I recommend Simatai. It takes longer to get there, but worth it.

Yes, there are parts or section in Great Wall that are opened to tourists to visit: such as Badaling (Beijing county) and further than that 'Mutianyu', 'Simatai' and 'Jinshanling'.
There are more Great Wall outside Beijing county opened to tourists but not many people go there. Somehow because of the difficult terrain and they havent constructed the equipment such as cable car, etc. Mostly because of the walls are very old, many parts of Great Wall are being preserved and renovated. Some part of Great Wall also very steep and not recommended for tourists.

For Great Walls around Beijing which are more opened to tourists they have built the cable car to make it more easier for tourists to reach the wall. Once you get to the section, you can climb some stairs before finally reaching the 'Wall'.

For reaching Great Wall you can hire taxi (make sure you share it with friend because it can costs you quite a lot, probably RMB 300 per day) or by taking bus (you can ask your hotel) but make sure you board on time to and fro, because once you are late, they wont wait and there's no hotel around the wall...

Here I attached info of the most famous Great Wall Section:Badaling, Mutianyu, Simatai and Jinshaling and how to get there... hope I helped!

Hi - i'm just the person to answer this for you as i live in China and i went to the Great wall !!
It's amazing and there are different starting points .....just get to any of them by car ...must pay the entrance fee !
Most of it is ok ....but some of it the government stops people from entering or walking on..and yes some has also been damaged over the years !!
It was one of the greatest experiences of my life - my mum and i walked all the way up - took us 3 hours !! You have to try it !! Truly breathtaking !!

Yea You can walk the great wall of china, take you ages though. I know some people who have tried and (failed) if you do good luck!

They do have laws which mean you can't perform tricks or stunt on the great wall of china, but walking it is fine.

Walk on it,yes.Walk the full length of it,no.Some parts of it no longer exist and some parts of it are little more than rubble that would prove very hard to walk on.The previous answers seem to be referring to the eastern end of the wall, the part you see in photos,a far cry from what you'll see in the far west of China.

Lol you do not have to hike to it! Just take any day tour in china which'll bring you to there by bus. I've personally climbed to only the third section when i was 7 and at beijing. really nice experience =)

Yes, I have walked on a part of it too. Took pictures with our group. And then we also rode on a camel for a photo. The camel was also there near the Great Wall.
