Of course what they said was true, at least when they were writing history so that it would be true. Decades after Jesus died, they wrote how Jesus fulfilled lots of prophecies of the Old Testament. The rest of the "prophecies" either didn't come true or were vague enough that anybody from any time could predict they came true in their era. Lots of ratioanlization made them fit quite well.
Just look at all of the apocalypse prophecies. The one that Jesus made about him coming back and the world ending that generation's lifetimes failed a couple thousand years ago, but that's been rationalized away many times over. Since then, there have been many predictions of the "actual" apocalypse throughout the centuries.

God gave the people a simple little test to see if they were true prophets or not. It was simple, did what they say come true. If it did not they were "discredited" and were not listened to any more. Of course the question is what do you do if a prophet prophesizes beyond their lifetime, or a lot of years down the road. In that case prophets were to make a double prophecy, one short term and one long term. If the short term prophecy came true than the long term one was to be believed also.

It is very easy to write about predictions coming true when you are writing about predictions that supposedly occurred in the past. In other words, a prediction, recorded after the fact, is not a prediction. When the New Testament was written, Jesus had to fit in with the predicted coming of the Messiah, and the details of Jesus' life were not accurately reported. The Messiah, for example, was supposed to come from Bethlehem, but Mary and Joseph were not from Bethlehem. The "census" that supposedly led to Joseph having to go to Bethlehem did not happen at that time, and Joseph's ancestors in that area were too far distant to have had any affect upon where he had to register. The trip to Bethlehem story was put in there to make Jesus' birth add up with the prophecy, to make him fit, in other words.

The prophets of old predicted what would happen in the near future if a certain people did not repent or turn towards God. And it happened, as spoken. Nathan prophesied that David's son would die because of his sin, and it came true.

Simply because all what they said happened, still happening, and so will happen. of course they can't predict future themselves, actually no one can but God, they have been told by God, i think to show people a proof of their honesty. Sadly there are a lot of people who still don't believe :s

123 ! It is as simple as that! All you need to do is read what they said / wrote and read history. Most of their "predictions" are now history.
If we can see that they were correct about what has happened we can be confident about what they have said will happen from now to the end.
Read what was prophesised about Tyre and Sidon and read what happened to it 200 years later VERY ACCURATE!
I'll trust God and His word anyday.
