I heard or read somewhere that in June this year, it is to be made compulsory that all paper driving licences in still in circulation had to be handed into the DVLA and you get issued with a new photolicence. Is this true? I've had my paper licence since I passed my test 10 years ago, Im kinda reluctant to hand it in because theres not many old paper licences left.

That's just a daft rumour. DVLA no longer issue the old paper licences, but you're not obliged to change yours. Be sure they would tell you if it did become compulsory.

I have not heard of this and my dad spends a lot of time working on cars while my uncle works with them for a living and neither of them have heard of this either.
Surely the DVLA would have made this information more public if they wanted all the people with paper driving licences in the UK to change theirs within 6 months from now.

I think if it was due to happen this June, there would be more publicity about by now....eg. adverts on the telly and in the papers etc.

I know what you mean about hanging on to your old licence. Somewhere in the house I've still got my little red book.....(way before your time). I wish I could find it.

I still have my old paper licence too, you don't need to have a passport to get the one with photo on it.

I have NOT heard that, and neither have my parents and brother. They all have Paper Licences and have NO intention in handing them in.

If you hand your paper licence in, and while waiting for a photo licence, and are stopped by the police for any reason, they will charge you for being an unlicenced driver as you will have nothing to show them.

Depends on the penalty, if it is death you may want to turn it in, if it is a $5 fine then maybe you will keep it. Of course without a picture it is hard to use it for identification, further, there is no tracking chip in the old paper licenses.

if i were you, i wouldnt hand it in
get a copy of it and have the copy signed by a JP or official person to verify its true validity
then wait a couple of months and go in there and say you lost your original one (say you lost your wallet and it was in there) and you had a copy made ages ago in case of emergency and get the new licence?
keep the original man ...

Why not apply for a new one by claiming a duplicate by just ticking the box lost/stolen.

You'll get over it, just like the new flip top cans

Even if they require you to get a new one, they might let you keep it. They do in Arizona. (They punch a hole in it, to indicate it is no longer valid)
