Nearly every Army specialty is probably in high demand at this time. So, I'm not surprised, nor do I disagree with your saying that fire support specialists are in great demand.

I suspect that this MOS is considered a "combat support" specialty. Although you wouldn't think of a 13F as being a combat type, just about everyone who's not well-protected at a higher headquarters is a potential target. Furthermore, in addition to the same basic training that all enlisted personnel are required to take, I suspect that 13F training is much more field-oriented. In other words, most new and lower-ranking 13Fs probably work in the field and not at artillery batteries or fire bases, necessarily. I don't think this is like your typical "office job," by the way.

And if your position is threatened or you come under fire for whatever reason, faster than you can blink your eye, you're going to be doing the same things a basic 11B (infantryman) does.

Good luck.

There are 13F embedded into each infantry platoon. These guys job is to accurately call for fire (mortars, artillery) when needed. Since they aren't part of the squads they usually get out of details(work that is tedious, repetitious or lacking in variety ) and usually stick around the leadership of the platoons. I suspect they are in high demand because people don't know what they are or do, so they don't join to become a FO. Mortality rate is not any higher than any other grunt.

No. When you watch the news, theyre showing you all the bad stuff and not enough of the good. Talk to your husband, Im sure he could tell you what to expect and how he feels about whats going on. Everyones opinion will most likely vary from one thing to the next. Your best bet is to talk to your husband and talk to the recruiter. You should support your husband in whichever decision he makes and he should talk with you about it since you're married. BTW, Army doesn't get that great of a paycheck.

these are the people who go on the line with the infantry units to call in fire as needed....in Vietnam the FO or Forward Observer,an Artillery Officer went with each Infantry company....if you are with somebody that needs fire support, then you are at the sharp end and you will be in it with them.....plus as soon as somebody figures out where all the iron falling on them is coming from, youre really gonna get it

yes, there is a huge need for them right now

no, not a real high mortality rate since they are often removed from the actual location and use computers and equipment to direct fire.

The "fire support" refers to weapons fire. Think about where they go for a minute.
