Depends on the state where you live and it also depends on how big it is or how much it weighs, and what it is used for. Many smaller box trailers are covered under your auto insurance. Check with your local DMV to see what their regulations are. Check with your auto insurance company also. My educated guess is if you are transporting things and you use it on roads and highways, you have to plate it, so it may need separate insurance.
