Hey guys,
Need some suggestions for somehow conveying to my neighbor that her dog is an incessant barker!
Each night the dog barks constantly, you know that bored, rhythmic "I am stuck in a backyard without any attention" kind of bark.
A couple of months back I left her an anonymous note in her mailbox, which she came over to ask me about. I ended up telling her in person that No, I wasn't mad, but YES her dog barks A LOT. She didn't really seem to get it though, just invited me over to meet her kids and her dog, which was nice...
...but it doesn't get me anymore sleep in the mean time.
So, I know this is THE WORST thing I can do, but when it barks I either throw it some dog biscuits (yep, reinforcing the barking! but I get 2 minutes of silence - I am desperate) or I yell SHUT UP!!! out the window (the yelling is supposed to be so the neighbors hear it, I am sure the dog couldn't care less if I yell at it!).
I AM GOING NUTS!
PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!
Heidi

Years ago we had such a problem in our neighborhood. My mom tried everything that everyone has suggested but it didn't work for long. Finally, every time the dog started barking, she would call them and ask, "Is everything okay at your house? Your dog is barking. Maybe you have a burglar!" After a couple of nights of that, the dog slept indoors.

I have been a dog owner for many years, and I would be more then willing to work with a neighbor if they came to me with a complaint such as this. Granted, not every pet owner is that way. If you want to talk to them...just be honest. Go over when your in a calm state of mind, not when your mad right after the let the little squeak toy out and your ready to climb the walls. Just ask if they were aware their dog is doing this and see if you both can work something out. Maybe they can tie him out somewhere else, if not ask if they can stand outdoors with him during the early & late times of day they let him out. If that fails you might try one of those ultrasonic devices (tho I hear their not all their cracked up to be). You may have no choice but to call animal control, but as you say that can cause problems between neighbors & would make it the last resort.

Call your local Animal Control and lodge a complaint. There are noise ordiances regarding this matter. The neighbor should kennel the dog in the house or in their garage at night. The neighbor will be cited and told to either correct the problem or stand a chance of being heavily fined or the dog taken away.
I have dogs that bark at air too...but have cured this by putting them in kennels in the house at night. In the summer they are put into kennels in a large shed outside. They feel secure in these kennels and don't bark.
They also howl ---We're on the emergency path for the ambulances that drive by -----Sirens hurt their ears. Fortunately----they're kenneled at night so they don't howl in the house!

Get in touch with your local council dog control section. They'll get in touch with your neighbour to get her to stop the dog barking or face a fine. You may have to fill out a record sheet setting out the times the dog barks.

Ya might have to call the cops, you tried the nice approach, that didn't work. I have a dog, sometimes she has to go out at 3am (just cause she can), sometimes she'll give a "Gruff" at something important (like the moon), I always go out and chase her in, last night it was 10*F, I not "IN LOVE" with my neighbors but, I won't let the dog bark at 3 am, even though my neighbor doesn't work (B.S. comp case), and has 3 illegal Apts in his house. I flush my boat motor for 15 minutes 2x a year, a few years ago he came over to complain that I'm causing "air pollution", he then started up a two-stroke leaf blower to clean his clothes on the clothes line that were drying, he told me "Don't do it again", I just laughed, he said "You think it's funny" ? I said "No but, it will be funny if I call the town tax assessor" His wife dragged him in the house, calling him an "IDIOT".

Go to the neighbors house first thing in the morning, and politely tell them that their dog barking is keeping you awake at night, and will they please bring the dog in the house at night. If they cannot do that, or something else to keep him quiet, I would call the police. Its a distruption of the peace. Possibly you could call the humane society in your town, and they could investigate as well. Its not really all that nice to leave a dog by himself in a kennel. He probably IS bored, and maybe cold, or lonely,,,etc etc. Might need to be checked out.

Some people never seem to get it. You need to be straight to the point and tell her the dog is barking and disturbing you. If you don't tell her directly outright to shut the dog up, you can't expect the dummy to get it that you are fed up unless you make it clear to her. If this doesn't work the next step is to blow your car horn in your driveway all night. I bet she calls the cops on you for disturbing her!

i think you should talk to your neighbour nicely that her dog is really affecting your sleep as it bark alot and they ought to do something to it. then, see how your neighbour reacts to this problem before going to the police. i don't think police can help much unless it's illegal to keep a dog at home. haha.

Call the police...they won't tell the neighbor who called...just that there was a report of annoying dog barking, and she will have to bring it in
