In OT times it was a commandment for that time and this reason:

Then comes the commandment about tattoos. In Lev 19:28 :

"You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD. " (NKJV)
These things were done as a means to worship false gods that did not really exist. God says he is a Jealous God in Exodus 20:5. We are not to practice the way of the heathen when we worship Him.(Deut. 8:19)

There is no law in the NT.

the bible doesn't condone the practice, but it also doesn't openly disagree with it. the bible talks about honoring your body as a temple. having or not having tattoos does not affect your spiritual walk, and having a tat certainly does not prohibit eternal life. the only thing i have against tatoos is that they are truly addictive, and the only reason im not sleeved is because tatoos are expensive. get the tat, if it has value to you and your identity, it won't deny you the privelige of heaven.

Check out the article from Sacred Ink.

"In this passage God is speaking to his covenant people Israel. He is specifically telling them to stay far from the religious practices of the surrounding people groups. The prohibited religious practices in these verses include eating bloody meat, fortune telling, certain hair cuts related to the priests of false cults, cutting or marking the body for dead relatives, cultic prostitution and consulting psychics. All these practices would lead God's beloved people away from Him and toward false gods that were not Gods at all."

I think your real question should be, why do you personally want a tattoo. Is it for you? or to fit in with the crowd? Will it lead you to other behaviors that will take you further away from your religion?

I think it's ok, I'm gettting one on my arm too. Jesus said the outside of the body is less important than the inside. Those of us who beleive in God are freaks anyway, might as well get tattoos and show everyone we are not just going to church on sunday for the fun of it.

The Old Testament says no & Jesus did not come to change the laws, He came to forgive our sins. We are not under the law we are under grace, but we should still keep the laws.

The Bible allows it, but that doesn't mean that its a good idea. Tattoos are like permanent bell-bottoms.
