what does it mean when you get the flag and there are 2 bullet caseings in it

American military funerals - The flag is folded and has generally 3 rifle shells put inside and is then presented to next of kin, "on behalf of a grateful nation." (Generally, the flag is given to the next-of-kin as a keepsake after its use during the funeral service. When there is no next-of-kin, the flag is presented to a friend making a request for it.

The casings are from the bullets fired at the funeral.

I honestly have never heard of the shell casings being prestented as well. The only time that I have heard of a casing being presented was one of the cannon rounds being presented to Generals and top ranking personnel. But the flag is a long honored tradition that dates back to the civil war
