I've studied Leonardo for many years now and I've been lucky enough to handle many of his original works.

In his drapery studies he usually used prepared linen on which he brushed grey tempra with white highlights.

For some of his studies he used metalpoint on prepared paper, pen and ink over lead point, pen and ink alone, soft black and red chalk, colour washes, charcoal, white gouache.

I think that for the most part when he jotted things down and made little sketches he liked to use pen and ink. His jotings reveal to us that he like to fold his papers into squares and use them like notebooks when he was out and about.

Painting materials

His favourite materials for painting were oil on wood panel. He did hower paint in tempera on wood and also used canvas. He used fresco also.

I think he liked oils because of the detail they allow. Tempera is more difficult for arists to manipulate.

Well, no one really knows for sure, but he sure used a lot of earthly colors(he developed a period of painting where people use excessive amounts of earth colors), but that time there was only about 15-20 colors to choose from, for oil paint binder I think he used cold pressed linseed oil.
