How about you go for the breed that best suits your lifestyle? Rather than a dog that is "cute".

When you chose a dog you need to decide how much time you will spend with it. A retriever needs lots of exercise and a cocker spaniel needs more grooming. Both require a long time commitment of care. You need to speak to breeders of both breeds as both have health issues and will be different sizes. How much room do you have to offer a dog? It's more about what you can offer a dog then what the dog breed is. As far as looks all have cute puppies. But in the long run it's the adult that you have to keep in mind. Size, health issues and time you can devote to a dog are important.

I have a cocker spaniel... and he hardly needs any grooming...he is not a demanding dog that needs a large walk every day...he will take it or leave it...has never been any trouble at all...and very very clever...
My friend has a retriever...they are very similar...but it was obviously bigger and needed more walking....
im obviously going to side with the cocker spaniel...and you right he is very cute and he still looks just like a puppy even though hes nearly 3...everyone admires him everywhere he goes and all he ever really wants is attention and food but what dog doesnt! :D xxx

umm.. its not like buying a car.. you cant just buy it cause its cute.. you have to factor in all the important things like do you have a yard , a house, an apartment, how big are you thinking this thing might get.. how much dog food can you carry at one time..
i want a dalmation because i love them.. but i also had a handicap dog that i originally bought for my husband when it was 5 weeks old a min shetland sheep dog .. but now i live in an apartment and not on the 3 acreas that i use to.. and i couldnt pick her up any more, and she needed to be able to go out side and run , so now i got my other fav dog.. the yorkie.. hes tiny.. tiny i can pick him up,, hes an inside dog. no need for a yard.. signed up to take classes in a few months for certification so i can officially keep him in my no pet complex.. because i retired my 6 year old sheep dog 2 months ago.. now she lives on a 64 acrea farm not far from here so she can finally be a dog and run and play.. they arent inside dogs.. point being.. you have to choice a pet based on your enviroment, what you will be doing with it, how much attentton you can give it or it will need, how much grooming, care, yard, etc,,, not just because its cute.. go to a web site and research both btreeds.. retrievs are lower maintainans but are bigger and need more room and out side running area. .where cocker spans need clipping at groomers, brushing, etc, are more lap dog like .. i have always liked them my self.. however.. my brother .. has always loved retrievers.. because they fetch, ride in the back of his truck and go hunting etc.. its not just whas right for you.. but whats right for the pet you pick as well.. you want to make sure your pet is as happy as it can be.. good luck

Please take this in consideration about cocker spaniels. They require a lot of grooming. Contrary to popular belief they are not the best for children and are typically intolerant of ear tugging etc. Also Cocker Spaniels have 15 genetic disorders with their eyes and are prone to ear infections ergo you have to clean their ears everyday and brush them out everyday. Unless you want to groom your dog yourself youll have to take the dog to the groomer at least once a month. They are awesome dogs but they are very high manitence.

Both of them are beautiful dogs. Retriever is bigger, needs more space. Spaniel has longer hair, gets more dirt or mud. If you have a house with a larger garden, take retriever. If you are in a city, in a flat, take spaniel.

golden retrievers would be the go alot smarter, but you would have to feed him more and more frequent exercise. as they like large spaces, if you live in a small house the cocker spaniel would be good you'll know the right dogwhen you see him

first ask yourself" what are your plans for your dog"? do you want to spend money every month at the groomers?- cockers need professional grooming,,,,, do youwant to go hiking in the woods swimmming at the beach etc. show in obedience trials?? thena golden is good,,,, goldens cost more to feed, are prone to hip dysplasia and skin problems,,,, cockers are prone to epilepsy etc. go to akc.org and read up read read read anything you can about these breeds before you decide... also,, goldens will need a bigger yard,,,,,,,,,,, try to buy a dog that is bred for your lifestyle first off then consider looks last.

I know several people with golden retrievers, including my other half's parents, and they're the loveliest dogs ever with few problems - as long as you train them to behave well, but that goes for most dogs eh. I'd definitely go for a retriever!

I'd go with the Golden Retriever. We always had Labrador Retrievers when I was growing up, and they are really well-behaved, friendly dogs.
