I know of the island and rivers named St. Croix, but wondered if Croix (which means "Cross" in french) was an actual person. Who or what was these places named for?

Columbus named the island Santa Cruz (Holy Cross). St. Croix is the French version of the Spanish name.

From the Catholic Church's list of Saints [1]:
"The people usually call St. Croix SANTA CRUZ (holy cross), the name given the island by Christopher Columbus."

The Catholic Pages [2] has no listing for St. Croix,
nor does The Patron Saints [3] page.

I don't believe St. Croix was a person.
