If you want a smaller dog, go for the Sheltie (It looks like a small collie) and if you want a larger dog, go for a Golden Retriever or Black Lab.

Choosing a dog comes down to your lifestyle and what look you want. However, I am a firm believer that when the right dog comes along you will know. Also don't necessarily cut out mixed breeds because most of the time they are the better dogs and less prone to medical problems. Begin with going to animal shelters, even if you don't find THE dog, you can talk to the attendants and get some ideas from them as well as some good pointers.

Labs are the friendliest most affectionate and intelligent dogs. I have had tons of different breeds and after having some aggressive ones I want the friendliest one. Labs are great they love everyone and everything. You do not have to worry about having them around other dogs or people. They are extremely devoted and loving. And very versatile. I will never be without a Lab. They are great. They are the number one service dogs and dogs in America and England because of their loving out going ways and their dedication to you.

If you want a larger dog, choose a boxer. They are really "people" friendly-they border on co-dependent lol! They love people and children, and usually can get along well with other dogs. They are loving companions with sweet dispositions and graceful and strong confirmation. They do not shed too terribly much, and they are very loyal and love to snuggle & cuddle.
If you don't have alot of time or space to exercise the dog, though-boxer is not for you. Left to their own devices (without proper guidance and training) they can be quite destructive.

A shut shu is the best dog, as long as you treat him right. He is good with kids, goes along with your mood swings, does not bark nor shed, and just is so much fun. He must be groomed every two months. If you cannot pay a groomer, get a short haired dog but check the breed personality first to make sure the personality fits your pet needs.

I have a border collie - she's very friendly and absolutely LOVES people. High maintenance though; she needs two one-hour runs every day, plus a 10-minute evening walk, plus general playtime. They're working dogs, but highly loveable.

look at your humane society or SPCA, they know all about the personalities of the dogs in their care and will be more than happy to help you pick out a little k9 companion that is perfect for you.
