The patient, 1990 Ford Aerostar Van. with a 3.0L V6 with fuel injection [EFI]system.

Symptoms:
<>Hard to crank when dead cold. Like it is not getting gas. You have to pump it and on about the 3rd time it fires.
<>From the top of the gas pedal stroke to the middle it acts as if it lacks fuel.
<>From the middle of the gas pedal stroke to the bottom it acts as if it is flooding(sometimes a gassy smell can be smelled from the exaust and the engine compartment.
<>Max speed[level road]about 30-35mph.
<>Max speed on hill or grade steeper than 6% 15mph.
<>Often stalls while idling or reversing.
<>After reaching normal operating temp. if the ignition is cut and the van sits for more than 3 minutes, it will not refire for anything until it cools off to near dead cold.

So, you crack Ford mechanics. Who is good enough to figure that one out?

What i would do is check te sensors to the computer from the engine. It sounds like one of them is bad. Your computer isn't getting the correct infomation.
I hope you have the shop manual. As much as I hate to do it I would take it to shop so they could hook it up to their computer if I couldn't figure out which senor was bad. There are some car repair newsgroups with some real smart people on them

I had a mustang that did this. Check to see if your fuel tank has a fuel sock. It's another filter inside the gas tank and see if that is clogged. I would also check the fuel pump for proper pressure. This is also a symptom of a bad ignition coil as well. Hope that helps.

sounds like bad a fuel pump or pressure regulator, but just because its cheaper I'd start with replacing PCV valve and TPS sensor, checking MAP (MFA) sensor, check O2 sensor, and check fuel pressure as that will tell you if your pump is bad, you may notice an unusual buzz or hum coming from around the back tires sometimes from a bad pump. check a Chilton's or Haynes manual for sensor values and fuel pressure and where and how to test them. less likely problems; intake header leak, bad head gasket. whatever the problem it doesn't sound cheap, good luck.

as a note: I assume that by hard to crank you mean hard to start, if its actually hard to crank means you have either an electrical problem or a bad starter, also you may need to change your oil to something better suited to the temp.

Weak fuel pump
No spark, ignition module
If the engine seems flooded, make sure the thermostat isn't stuck open. Engine suppose to run at 190-210 degrees.
One other thing may be the MAP sensor

From your description I would tell you to have the fuel pressure regulator checked out or possibly the fuel pump is weak.
My money is on the pump. Or both.

Your catalytic converter may be plugged up and not allowing the exhaust gasses flow out , choking the motor , this will feel like its not getting gas and the choke is closed,
