Here's a quick test...
Reboot your PC into safe mode (Usually F8 at the beginning when the screen has a black background.) Once in safe mode load a few simple programs and see if they're loading quicker. If so, then there's programs being loaded when your normally booting up. Reboot, this time normally. Open taskmanager ( Start, Run, Taskmgr.exe) and look at the CPU usage. With no programs running in a window your CPU usage should be 15% max. If it's higher, then click the processes tab and then click the column labeld CPU. The first Item (or close to it) should be System idle processes. If there's anything higher then trhat write the name down and google it to see if it's a valid proicess. If not, then right click and close.
If nothing unusal is showing then you may have either a virus or malware running. Get a good spyware program, such as Spybot Search and Destroy or Ad-aware. BOth are free and I actually run both, as I have yet to find a program that gets everything 100% of the time. Also, run a virus scan to make sure you have no viruses or trojans on your PC. Also, make sure your firewall is being used. If you don't have one, may I recommend Zonelabs Zonealarm? It's also free and works pretty well and is, in my opinion, pretty straight forward.

maybe turn everything off in the background by going to your run command, on the start menu and typing msconfig and it should open a box, look through the tabs, should be near the end and turn off all the stuff ya dont need...also put more ram in, its really easy and can be cheap if ya dont need a lot

faster? try defragging and scan your PC for viruses,
then, if that doesn't work, you can get more RAM for memory space, it helps speed up your computer ALOT
