My new Beagle pup is great & we're getting on really well with him. However, he seems to make retching sounds every so often, as if something is in his throat. This doesn't seem to faze him at all he just gets on with what he was doing. I've heard that this can often be inherent in Beagles, but would like to hear from other Beagle owners to set my mind at rest.

He's had all this vaccinations and has been wormed also.
There's no particular time when he does it, though I would say mostly when he's wandering around or playing. As a hun breed, he sniffs a lot, so maybe he's inhalling dust or something? It sounds rather like a coughing sound.

Its called a collapsed trachea, common in small dogs. There is no need for medical attention and it goes away after the dog swallows a few times. It looks horrible when happening and the dog just stands there gasping for breath, making this gross noise with its front legs in the Bull Dog stance. Look it up your dog is fine.

when he bakes the sound does he grul up like he is going to throw something up? does it occur when he is excited or has seen anything that might frighten him?
i have grown up with beagles all my life, and i don't think I have ever noticed a retching sound, although it may be the pup finding his voice. like babies make strange noises before they are able to make recognisable sounds.
just to be sure i suggest that you call the breeder or the store you got him from.

Most professional animal business, vets, or hospitals will help you. My shites Sui does that especially when he must do his duty. He does it when he is cold. He does it when he has stole too much food. This may also be a problem for the vet, call and find out, usually information is free on phone calls.

When does he do this. I had a beagle that would 'grunt' when you'd pet him... like a cat purring.. but it was a freaky sound. His mom was a registered beagle and apparently did the same thing, only louder

I have had 2 beagles in the past...neither did that. Maybe he has worms, which is common and quite treatable with medication. Consult your vet

I've never heard anything like this about beagles. I would make sure he doesnt have worms or kennel cough, have him checked by your vet.

I've had a few (29) and none did that unless they had an obstruction or phlegm. Take it to a vet.
