I'm a college athlete and an avid health enthusiast. Omega-3's are huge for me because of there effects on insulin, and secondly on inflammation, but they have many other positive effects.
They are actually listed as heart health supplements by most stores, it's also good for the nervous system and has been used to treat Schizophrenia and Huntington's disease. A joke I've heard before is that you can type in "omega 3" and the name of any disease and you'll see someone used it in a treatment.
Americans simply don't eat as much fish as earlier man. Whether you believe in creation or evolution, or what ever, you can understand that fish used to be a primary source of food, but now all I seem to get regularly is tuna (which is low in omega 3's). Even further, the animals we used to eat, used to get their food from water as well. But it seems Omega-3's are just taken out of the food chain equation nowadays.
Just a footnote, if you buy omega-3's, EPA and DHA are the most important ingredients.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are a required nutrient just like vitamin B-12 and iron. It acts as a lubricant in brain, skin, blood vessels and the rest of the body. But you do not need to get it from fish that are very polluted. If you have to use a fish supplement of it, only use pharmaceutcal grade where they have taken out all the poison. I use organic flaxseed to get omega-3.
See GOOD AND BAD FATS on site below to see how it helps fat people to lose weight. Then click on VEGETARIAN CONCERNS to learn more about omega-3 and other nutrients you may not get enough of. People used to get plenty of omega-3 from eating purslane leaf.

I've taken thjem for a couple years and tend to think that they improve mental functioning (doesn't help with typos tho)
they provide some of the 'key ingredients' that the nervous system requires.
I imagine that a child would fare well with them
