"Nincompoop" is a mangled form of "non compos mentis" a Latin phrase that indicates a failing mind. "Nincompoop" is more often used to indicate stupidity, not insanity.

the word "nincompoop" is a 1950's word (when we weren't allowed to use bad language) that we currently use for dummie, moron, a-h, and a whole list of other words. That word is used by people who lived in 1950 or early 1960's.
